ISSUE: Some 2004-2006 F-150 and 2006 Mark LT 4X4 vehicles built before 4/24/2006 may exhibit a noise in 2 wheel drive from the front Integrated Wheel Ends (IWE) and/or the 4X4 system being inoperative. The IWE solenoid may have ingested water and passed it to the IWE system causing water contamination in the vacuum portion of the system.I have a 2012 F150 Platinum with 4x4. I originally heard a grinding noise from passenger side. Assumed it was the IWE system. I changed the solenoid and it went away for a couple days but came back. I checked the vacuum and it looked good. Changed the check valve. From there the sound changed from grinding to squeaking.IWE 2017 F150 grinding noise issue. The hub is not engaging completely because it usually has wear from the actuator rubbing against the iwe gear trying to engage but can't because of weak or no vacuum. Doesn't matter the mileage, it can happen at anytime. Sounds somewhat like you're describing a wheelbearing, but noise disappearing is a pretty good indications of an IWE. Turns out it's an IWE issue. The 4x4 wants to engage for a moment and you get metal on metal. There's a TSB on it. They did the work under warranty and replaced the check valves. Do a search on YouTube under F150 IWE noise and you'll find some surprising similarities lol.
